1 When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:
2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.
5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.
7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.
8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.
9 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;

20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.
21 The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas.
22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.
27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.
28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
47 Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.
48 And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.
49 The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
50 Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.
51And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;
52 And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
53 And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
54 Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
55 And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
56 Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children.
57 When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:
58 He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.
59 And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

According to his ancient biographers: "In the Pythagorean school, knowledge was transmitted symbolically, through the use of cryptic statements and riddles, in which a small number of words was pregnant with multiple levels of interpretation. Students were required to find meaning in these enigmatic lessons, sometimes through questioning and dialogue, sometimes by meditating upon their many possible meanings." (1) If this was true of Pythagorean teachings, it was even more significant in more ancient schools of knowledge; it was, after all, at these schools, in Egypt, Babylon, and elsewhere, that Pythagoras gained his knowledge. In the case of the Indian tradition, both in Vedic times and later in the Hindu and Buddhist periods, the term most commonly encountered for this kind of cryptic literature was the sutra or collection of sutras. While this is often translated as "aphorism," or "formula," the word comes from the Sanskrit root for "thread," a usage that persists in the modern word "suture." As doctors use sutures to sow us up after surgery, the ancient sutras tie together our knowledge and integrate our awareness. There is no better example than the teachings contained in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras whose terse expressions contain instructions for the development of higher states of consciousness. Similarly, all the principles of vedic mathematics are encapsulated in sixteen sutras, which, along with thirteen sub-sutras, provide the basis for all the operations described in "The Cosmic Computer" (2). "He [Pythagoras] held that the ultimate substances of all things, material and immaterial, were numbers, which had two distinct and complimentary aspects. On the one hand, they had a spatial and dynamic existence, and, on the other, they were fundamental formulating principles which were purely abstract. Thus, for example, the monad was understood by the Pythagoreans both as the number one, which had physical properties that could be manipulated in nature, and as an idea, which embodied the original unity at the source of all creation." (6) The fundamental formulating principles in the universe are those values of unity, duality, diversity and wholeness we have already encountered. In Pythagorean thought these principles are clearly expressed in the first four numbers. Furthermore, this symbolism can be interpreted in terms of the Quadrivium, the four Pythagorean mathematical disciplines: arithmetic, music, geometry and astronomy. This is the level of the forms and it is reached, Plato tells us, through the use of the "second phase" of the dialectic, a technique that, according to Jonathan Shear is similar to the practice of jñana yoga. (9) This again reflects the Pythagorean approach to mathematics, one that must, on some level at least, apply to vedic maths also: "For Pythagoras, mathematics served as a bridge between the visible and invisible worlds. He pursued the discipline of mathematics not only as a way of understanding and manipulating nature, but also as a means of turning the mind away from the physical world, which he held to be transitory and unreal, and leading it to the contemplation of eternal and truly existing things that never vary. He taught his students that by focusing on the elements of mathematics, they could calm and purify the mind, and ultimately, through disciplined effort, experience true happiness." Hala Hala is a gotra of Jats found in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh states in India and in Sindh area of Pakistan. According to the Bards of the Hala gotra, King Shalvahan, son of Gaj founded his capital at Sorath in Gujarat, where the descendants of King Krishna, brother of King Shalbahan ruled for several generations. In the tenth generation there was a powerful king named Hala. For twenty two generations thereafter this country upto Nasik was ruled by this dynasty and was called Halar. The empire included Bengal, Karnataka, Gujarat, Sindh and Kashmir. This Kingdom lasted from 187 Vikram to 227 Vikram. Sorath - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia - 9:45pm Sorath Sorath: This is an India musical raga (composition) that appears in the Sikh tradition from northern India and is part of the Sikh holy scripture called Sri Guru Granth Sahib (SGGS.) Every raga has a strict set of rules which govern the number of notes that can be used; which notes can be used; and their interplay that has to be adhered to for the composition of a tune. In the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikh holy Granth (book) there are a total of 31 raga compositions and this raga is the ninth raga to appear in the series. The composition in this raga appear on a total of 65 pages from page numbers 595 to 660. Raga Sorath appears in the Ragmala as a ragini of Raga Megha; today it belongs to the Khamaj thata. Besides Guru Nanak, Sorath was used by Guru Amar Das, Guru Ram Das, Guru Arjan and Guru Tegh Bahadar for a total of 150 hymns plus numerous slokas. Sorath belongs to the cold season and is performed in the first quarter of night. The mood is light and cheerful, with a pleasing sound resembling Raga Desh. The texts composed to this raga show how the words of the Guru can enlighten the mind. All fears vanish and one is filled with bliss. Sorath, 2012 and anthroposophy - AdamMichaelis This essay is addressed to readers familiar with the concepts and the esoteric understanding of the Mystery of Golgotha in anthroposophy. Hence we take for granted the knowledge of the third Sorath-impulse in 1998 as predicted by Rudolf Steiner from the apocalyptic number of the beast, 666, and how this impulse generates special significance from four circumstances: 1) simply by being the third in the sequence: 666, 1332, 1998, since Sorath, the Sun Demon, wishes to mock the Holy Trinity and the Mystery of Golgotha associated with the number 333 (1998 = 3 x 666 or 6 x 333); 2) due to the fact that this third impulse is the first after the beginning of the fifth post-Atlantean cultural age in 1413 and the dawn of the consciousness soul, which is also the start of the direct influence of the Asuras on man in consequence of this new exceedingly individualized thought- and ego structure; 3) because of the conjunction with the predicted appearance of the Etheric Christ in the first third of the twentieth century (1933) and his taking over the function as Lord of Karma at the end of the century; 4) and finally owing to the impending incarnation (incorporation) of Ahriman in a human being in the beginning of the third millennium. If we pause and consider for a moment the pivotal cosmic and evolutionary meaning of the Mystery of Golgotha in the middle of creative time and space, then we can also appreciate the importance of the year 1998 and the present period only some 2000 years after the Resurrection of Christ. Actually they are highly integrated, synchronized and coordinated events.
Not that this urgent situation has drawn much attention outside anthroposophical circles and even within these only to some degree, although several books have been published on the subject. In comparison to the apocalyptic fuss about the year 2012 and the date 21.12 of winter solstice, where the Maya calendar ends and abruptly stops its “long count” of 5.125 years … signalling what? … the end of the world or a total New-Age-style beginning? … there has been next to silence in the public at large with regard to this crucial time for esoteric (and exoteric) Christianity, and, frankly, the true spiritual future of man. The most recent anthroposophically inspired book[i] on 1998 and the coming of Ahriman tries to remedy this omission by combining these two dates and themes (1998 and 2012). The authors take their point of departure in Rudolf Steiner’s account of the ahrimanic Mexican mysteries of cruel black magic concomitant with the Christ-events of Palestine and try to approximate time cycles and specific dates of esoteric Christianity (based on the factor: 1 day in the 1290 days of the ministry of Jesus Christ = 1 orbit of Saturn = 29½ years) to the year 2012, which takes them to the year 2018. Yet another approximation relates to the astronomic importance of winter solstice 2012 due to its very rare alignment with the centre of our galaxy, actually a “window of alignment” spanning the period 1980-2016. The authors fasten on the year 2016 as a final limit for this alignment and the proximity of the “2012-window” (1980-2016) with the “present Christ-day”, the “thirty-ninth day” of the temptation of Christ in human calendar (1988-2018). But actually the midpoint of the “2012-window” is 1998, making this year even more decisive. Surely the linking together of the ahrimanic Mexican mysteries of black magic with the present-day Sorath-impulse and the coming of Ahriman from the American continent and hence the possible relevance of the Mayan calendar for our understanding of the present time is undeniable, but the connection between the years 1998 and 2012 can readily be understood on a more evident background.
In order to understand this connection, we must first point out some other landmarking dates and cycles pertaining to this whole time-complex. Of course these dates and periods are also discussed in the above-mentioned book as elsewhere in anthroposophical literature with references to Rudolf Steiner’s work. We have the battle between Michael and the ahrimanic angels around the earth and their downfall from 1841-79. Michael is appointed the new Time Spirit in 1841 (for the rest of the fifth period until 3573) and is also the leading Archangel from 1879 (for the next 350 years). This adds enormous weight to the importance of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first century. Then in 1899 we have the end of the Kali Yuga, the dark age of materialism, lasting 5000 years! And finally we have the forthcoming appearance of Christ in the etheric, the Parousia or the Second Coming of Christ in the Christian tradition, anticipated by Rudolf Steiner to occur in 1933. In connection with the Etheric Christ we have the cycle of 33.33 years corresponding with the total lifetime of Jesus Christ [ii], which demarcate the years 1899, 1933, 1966 and 1999 as important (56th – 59th cycle since the Resurrection, 5. April, A. D. 33), and we notice here the remarkable coincidence of those years with the end of Kali Yuga 1899 and with the Sorath impulse of 1998.
Now, to understand the connection between the years 1998 and 2012, we can draw on an interesting work on The Occult Significance of the 12 Years, 1933-45, in the Light of Spiritual Science.[iii] In this book the author reflects on the (perhaps too) early death of Rudolf Steiner in 1925, which prevented him from carrying over the impulse of anthroposophy to the decisive year 1933. The author then conveys a supersensible event in the Michael-community during the years 1933-45 based on the surplus of life force from the “missing” years (1924-1931/3) of Rudolf Steiner’s lifetime on earth, and he expands this Michaelic influence to the periods 1967-79 and 1999/2000-12, pointing out that 1979 is the “first full resurrection cycle (3 x 33.33 years) of Michael’s epoch (1879-1979)”. We might add that 1979 is also 3 x 33.33 years after the downfall of the ahrimanic angels after their heavenly battle with Michael (1841-79). There is every reason to believe that Michaels activity responds to and is coordinated with the 33.33 year cycle of the Etheric Christ, and so we must understand the 12-year periods of 1933-45, 1966/67-79 and 1999/2000-12 as a timeframe in which Michael battles intensively on behalf of Christ with the opposing powers carrying on his achievement in 1841-79, and we might add to this scheme the period from 1899-1911/12. It seems as if there is a 12 year displacement between the two 33.33 cycles of Michael and the Etheric Christ leading up to the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the new millennium. The “battle-periods” correspond with yet another feature of the Etheric Christ-cycle.[iv] We must assume that the last 3½ year of the 33.33 year cycle corresponding with the ministry of Jesus Christ is a period of special positive impulse generation, for example in 1962-66/67, then followed by a battle in 1966/67-79. We see here a pattern of synchronized cooperation between Christ and Michael. Since the 33.33 years cycle of the etheric Christ beginning in 1999 corresponds with the 1998 Sorath impulse and is followed by the 12 year Michael-battle 1999/2000-12, evidently the two years 1998 and 2012 are closely linked together in esoteric Christianity. These considerations leave us with an overall time schedule for this whole complex of supersensible and historic events in which Sorath is mimicking and shadowing the etheric Christ.

Before we discuss this time-schedule in detail, we shall address our primary concern in this essay, namely the workings and strategy of Sorath from his 1998-vantage point. That same year saw a book with an independent and fresh view of the evil powers,[v] proposing a different appraisal of the traditional polarity of luciferic and ahrimanic powers after 1413 and the beginning impact of the Asuras – and, we might add – after Sorath settled in the inner of the earth during the mystery of Golgotha and made himself the directing and organizing principle of all three evil powers, thereby gaining direct access to all the lower members of man, the astral, the etheric and the physical. When the Asuras are working behind Lucifer and Ahriman, these agents of evil are more closely bound together with a spill-over effect between all three principles and an intensification creating a new organism of dynamic evil never seen before. When Christ became man, Sorath wanted to become God and henceforth erected his evil trinity opposing the Holy Trinity. This coordination has speeded up the human confrontation with evil in the last two or three centuries giving men opportunities of hitherto unsurpassed self-responsibility and individual freedom and community, but at the same time opening up to the possible downfall of man to Sorath in 2012. The author mentions some illustrative examples of this new dynamic in his discussion of the signatures of Sorath-activity in the twentieth century (nuclear power, Fascism and AIDS), and in order to illuminate the matter further, let us here bring one more example in a brief sketch.

The Qabalah on Numbers
The Qabalah on Numbers The Jewish Rabbis discovered so much of interest and importance behind the merely superficial value of numbers, and of words as their representatives, that they gradually developed a complete science of numerical conceptions apart from mathematics. This took the name of Kabalah or Qabalah, Cabbala, or even Cabala, words variously misspelt from QBLH - the Received Doctrine, from the root QBL, meaning to Receive. The Greeks as aforesaid did not develop nor use their letters as numbers for mental conceptions, yet in the Middle Ages we often find Greek letters used to transliterate Hebrew similars, and so there was formed a bastard Greek Kabalah on the Hebrew type. It must constantly be borne in mind that all Hebrew words or numbers are read from right to left, or the re-verse of English words; but in their English transliteration they are here in English order. The corresponding numerals, Greek and Hebrew letters, are here given with their English names, and the English synonymous letters are also added. At some periods, the five finals were not used for the hundreds, but instead Tau was written for 400 and other hundreds added; thus 500 was TQ. Another point of importance is that the Jews never write JH Jah for 15, because it is a Deity title, they use instead 9, 6 thus TV, Teth, Vau. The Qabalists used JH only when they de-sired to call attention to the Holy Name in the number. In certain Qabalistic numerical computations many Rabbis deemed it permissible to add an Aleph, one, and this they called Colel. In some cases we find the Greeks to have used their letters in direct order for purposes of numeration, as may be seen in some copies of very old poems (the 24 books of Homers Iliad and Odyssey, for example), in which the stanzas bear the letters consecutively, in a similar manner to the Hebrew letters heading the portions of the 1 19th Psalm in our Bibles. The word Kabalah includes the Hebrew Doctrines of Cosmogony and Theology as well as the Science of Numbers. The former is specified as the Dogmatic Qabalah, the latter as the Literal Qabalah. By means of associating the ancient doctrines of Numbers with the letters of the alphabet, the Planets, Stars, Zodiacal signs and other astronomical terms, a form of divination became practiced, by which the professors attempted to foretell the future, life and death, good and evil Fortune, detection of theft, etc., an ample explanations of which may be studied by the curious in the ______ Holy Guide of John Heydon. With this system is associated the practice of pure Astrology, the divination of Fate by means of the Heavenly bodies, especially the formation of the so-called Horoscopes - schemes of the arrangement of the Planets at the moment of Birth, from which all the important phases of the life can be inferred by some few persons. The Kabalah became a means of handing down from one generation to another hidden truths, religious notions, secrets of nature, ideas of Cosmogony, and facts of history, in a form which was unintelligible to the uninitiated; and the revealing of the secrets, and the methods of interpretation were veiled in mystery, and only to be approached through Religion. The more practical part of the system was involved in the three processes of Gematria, Notariqon and Temura. 1. Gematria, a method depending on the fact that each Hebrew letter had a numerical value. When the sum of the numbers of the letters composing a word was the same as the sum of the letters of an-other word, however different, they perceived an analogy between them, and considered them to have a necessary connection. Thus certain numbers got to be well known as meaning certain things; and not words only, but sentences were treated in this manner; thus, as an example refer-ring to Genesis XVIII. V. 2, we find the words, and lo, three men," Vehennah, shalisha, Vhnh Shlsh; this set down in numbers becomes 6, 5, 50, 5, 300, 30, 300, 5, which amount to 701. Now the words, these are Michael, Gabriel and Raphael," Alu Mikhael Gabriel ve Raphael," Alu Mikal GBRIAL V Rpal converted are 1, 30, 6, 40, 10, 20, 1, 30, 3, 2, 200, 10, 1, 30, 6, 200, 80, 1, 30, also amounting to 701, and the Rabbis argued that these two sets of three beings were identical. Some Christian Kabalists point out that in Genesis xlix. V. 10 we find Yebah Shiloh," YBA Shilh, Shiloh shall come," which amount to 358. And that the word Messiah," Mshych is 40, 300, 10, 8 or 358. But so is also Nachash, the Serpent of Moses, Nchsh, 50, 8, 300. And I must remark that the claim to translate Shilh, or, as some ancient He-brew MSS. write it, Shlh, by Shiloh," in the sense of Jesus Christ, is far fetched. The word is simply rest," or peace," in its simplest meaning, but also is the Scorpio of the Chaldean Zodiac (related to Nachash, serpent) and Judah," of whom Jacob is talking in the prophecy, is the sign of the Zodiac; Leo for Judah is a lions whelp" (the Chaldean Zodiac has a lion couchant), he crouches as a lion." In this sense, then, the scepter shall not de-part from Judah," i.e., power shall not leave Leo, until Leo, until Shelah, Shiloh or Scorpio shall come up or rise. Astronomy teaches that as Leo passes away from the meridian, Scorpio rises. The title Comforter," Menachem," Mnchm, 40, 50, 8, 40, amounting to 138, and the title The Branch," applied to the Messiah in Zechariah iii. V. 8, namely, Tzmch, 90, 40, 8 also 138, are of the same number. Metatron, the great angel MThRThn, and Shaddai ShDI, Sh, =300 is used as a glyph of the the spirit of the living gods," Ruach Elohim Ruch ALHIM, which transmutes into 200, 6, 8, 1, 30, 5, 10, 40 or 300. The Kabalists sometimes considered the units to refer to Divine Beings, the tens to celestial bodies, hundreds to things of earth, and thousands to future events. 2. Notariqon, a word derived from the Latin notarius, a shorthand writer, means the construction of a word from the initial or final letters of the several words of a sentence; or vice versa the construction of a sentence of which each word in order begins with the several letters composing a given word — processes of contraction and expansion, therefore. Refer to Deuteronomy xxx. V. 12, and find that Moses asks, Who shall go up for us to heaven?" the initials of the words of the sentence, My Yolh Lnu HshMymh, read My yeolah lenu hashemimha," form the word MYLH or Mylah," which means Circumcision," and the final letters from the word Jehovah, Yhuh or IHVH, suggesting that Jehovah pointed out the way, by circumcision, to heaven. Again, the first six letters of the book of Genesis, Brashit, Berasit, translated In the beginning," but more properly In wisdom," are the initials of the words Brashit Rah Alhim Shyqblu Ishral Turh, read Berasit rauah Elohim shyequebelu Israel torah," which mean In the beginning, God was that Israel would accept the Law." The famous Rabbinic name of power, "AGLA," is formed of the initials of the sentence, "Tu potens in saeculum Domine," Ath Gbur Loulm Adni, Ateh gibur loulam Adonai Melekh namen," ADNI MLK Namn, meaning The Lord and Faithful King." 3. Temura means Permutation; sometimes the letters of a word are transposed according to certain rules, and with certain limitations; at others each letter of a word is replaced by another according to a definite scheme, forming a new word, of which permutation there are many recognized forms. For example, the alphabet of 22 letters is halved and the two sets placed one over the other in reverse order, thus: — A B G D H V Z Ch T Y K Then A is changed to T, and V to P, and so on; so Babel=Bbl becomes Sheshak, i.e., ShShk used by Jeremiah xxv. V. 26. This form is called Atbash or At-Bsh; it will be seen that there must be 21 other possible forms, and these were named in order, thus, Albat, Agdat, etc.; the complete set was called the combinations of "Tziruph." The mummy of a young man with his hands and feed bound, his face contorted in an eternal scream of pain. But who was he and how did he die? On a scorching hot day at the end of June 1886, Gaston Maspero, head of the Egyptian Antiquities Service, was unwrapping the mummies of the 40 kings and queens found a few years earlier in an astonishing hidden cache near the Valley of the Kings. The 1881 discovery of the tombs, in the Deir El Bahri valley, 300 miles south of Cairo, had been astonishing and plentiful. Hidden from the world for centuries were some of the great Egyptian pharaohs - Rameses the Great, Seti I and Tuthmosis III. Yet this body, buried alongside them, was different, entombed inside a plain, undecorated coffin that offered no clues to the deceased's identity. It was an unexpected puzzle and, once the coffin was opened, Maspero found himself even more shocked. He had been buried in exalted company, yet been left without an inscription, ensuring he would be consigned to eternal damnation, as the ancient Egyptians believed identity was the key to entering the afterlife. Moreover, his hands and feet had been so tightly bound that marks still remained on the bones. Who could he be, this screaming man, assigned the anonymous label 'Man E' in the absence of a proper name?

An autopsy, performed by physicians in 1886 in the presence of Maspero, did little to shed any light on the subject. One of the physicians, Daniel Fouquet, believed the contracted shape of his stomach cavity showed he had been poisoned, writing in his report that 'the last convulsions of horrid agony can, after thousands of years, still be seen' - yet his science was unable to help him ascertain why. Even marrying these findings with historical documents only allowed experts to speculate. Some believed 'Man E' was the traitor son of Rameses III, who'd been involved in a coup to remove him from the throne, others that he was an Egyptian governor who had died abroad and been returned to his homeland for burial. Some believed the unconventional manner of his mummification showed that he was not Egyptian at all, but a member of a rival Hittite dynasty, who had died on Egyptian soil. Temple 1976 APPENDIX IV Page 265 Plutarch wrote a fascinating essay entitled 'The E at Delphi',1 actually in the form of a dialogue, featuring Plutarch himself and several other speakers. It is to be remembered that Plutarch was a close personal friend of Clea, the Delphic priestess of his day, and he knew much and always sought to learn more about the nature and history of the oracles not only of Delphi but elsewhere as well. He was, however, most interested of all in Delphi itself, for he was one of the two priests of Apollo there. The central subject of the discussion is the letter E which was a prominent inscription at the Delphic shrine. (That is, the letter E was carved in stone quite on its own at Delphi and was a subject of much curious speculation to the classical Greeks, who retained no tradition of the meaning of the ancient inscription of this single letter.) F. C. Babbitt, in his Introduction to the dialogue, says : 2 Plutarch, in this essay on the E at Delphi, tells us that beside the well-known inscriptions at Delphi there was also a representation of the letter E, the fifth letter of the Greek alphabet. In searching for an explanation of the unexplainable it is only natural that the three meanings of EI (`five', 'if', 'thou art') should be examined to see if any hypothesis based on any one of them might possibly yield a rational explanation. . . . Plutarch puts forward seven possible explanations of the letter. . . . Attempts to explain the letter have been also made in modern times by Gottling . . . and by Schultz . . . Roscher . . . C. Robert . . . 0. Lagercrantz . . N. Bates, in the American Journal of Archaeology xxix (1925), pp. 239-46, tries to show that the E had its origin in a Minoan character E . . . later transferred to Delphi. Since the character was not understood, it, like other things at Delphi, came to be associated with Apollo. This character has been found on the old omphalos discovered in 1913 at Delphi in the temple of Apollo. Interesting are the two coins reproduced in Imhoff-Blumer and P. Gardner, A Numismatic Commentary on Pausanius, plate X nos. xxii and xxiii (text p. 19), which show the E suspended between the middle columns of the temple. Learned scholars should note that the letter represented is E, not EI : therefore such explanations as are based on the true diphthong are presumably wrong. Page 266 The second explanation offered by Plutarch is in fact the correct one. This is how Plutarch suggests it: Ammonius smiled quietly, suspecting privately that Lamprias had been indulging in a mere opinion of his own and was fabricating history and tradition regarding a matter in which he could not be held to account. Someone else among those present said that all this was similar to the nonsense which the Chaldaean visitor had uttered a short time before: that there are seven vowels in the alphabet and seven stars that have an independent and unconstrained motion; that E is the second in order of the vowels from the beginning, and the sun the second planet after the moon, and that practically all the Greeks identify Apollo with the Sun. The facts that Delphi is the second descending centre in the geodetic octave, and that it is symbolized by the second vowel E, would seem to go well together. The seven vowels (each corresponding to one of the oracle centres) were uttered in succession as the holy 'unspeakable' name of God by Egyptian priests. Demetrius of Phalerum, the student of Aristotle's Lyceum and who founded the famous great library of Alexandria when later in life he was exiled to Egypt, tells us in his surviving treatise On Style: 'In Egypt the priests sing hymns to the gods by uttering the seven vowels in succession, the sound of which produces as strong a musical impression on their hearers as if flute and lyre were used.' In Chapter XVI of The White Goddess, Robert Graves discusses this too, and there quotes Demetrius. Graves also refers to an eight-letter version of the sacred name. It may be that if one wants to count the base oracle centre (which in musical analogy is the octave expression of the top centre) one should have an eight-letter version. This version of the name is : JEHUOVAO. We are faced with archaeological evidence that the second vowel, E, was prominently associated with the second oracle centre in descending order. (See Plate 12 of this book.) And we know from Herodotus that Dodona, the top oracle centre, was said to be founded by Egyptian priestesses from Thebes in Egypt. We also know that certain Egyptian priests sang the seven vowels (or eight vowels, including an aspirate) in succession. We have already seen that the geodetic oracle centres seem to have an octave structure. And as this book went to press a discovery became known which demonstrated the existence of the heptatonic, diatonic musical scale in the ancient Near East. We may even make a presumption that the uttering of the seven vowels in succession may possibly have corresponded to the seven notes of the octave (but we may never know that for certain). And it is most important to emphasize that, however bizarre to us, the association of a vowel with an oracle centre is not our invention or surmise. The E may not only be read about in Plutarch but seen on ancient coins and on the omphalos stone itself (for both of which see Plate I4). And this association of the second vowel with Delphi has never been explained by anyone. So granted all the above, what follows ? If each oracle centre had a vowel /Page 267/ associated with it, then the second vowel being associated with the second centre would seem to imply a corresponding arrangement for the other centres. And if that is the case, it would seem that the entire system would be associated with and actually comprise a geodetic spelling-out, over eight degrees of latitude, of the unspeakable holy name of God, known commonly to the Hebrews as 'Jehovah' It is most important that anyone intrigued by this possibility should keep a wary eye for any further evidence. We should be on the lookout for representations of or associations of other vowels at the other centres. These may already be known to specialists in the field or there may be evidence of this sort languishing unclassified and unexplained in the basement of some museum. Or this sort of evidence may come to light at any time in the future. One place to begin looking would, it seems to me, be with an examination of the omphalos stone from Delos, which is to be seen in Plate 12 of this book. Does this omphalos stone have a single letter inscribed on it similarly to the Delphi omphalos stone? And what of all the other omphalos stones, such as the one from Thebes in Egypt (see Plate 2). Are any of these well enough preserved to show a puzzling single hieroglyph of a vowel ? I have not carried out any investigation of this sort myself at the present time. In closing, it would seem that the E at Delphi must fall into some coherent system of the kind I suggest, and the explanation of the enigma must be connected with Plutarch's lightly advocated second explanation — that to do with E being the second vowel. (Babbitt's exclusion of the diphthong on the basis of the ancient coins to be seen in Plate 14 of this book is therefore crucial and to my view conclusive.) Notes

It contains all the essential facts given in Plutarch's work, and the only things omitted are his derivations and mythological speculations, which are really unimportant for the Egyptologist. Egyptian literature is full of allusions/ Page lxxx / to events which took place in the life of Osiris, and to his persecution, murder, and resurrection, and numerous texts of all periods describe the love and devotion of his sister and wife Isis, and the filial piety of Horus. Nowhere, however, have we in Egyptian a connected account of the causes which led to the murder by Set of Osiris, or of the subsequent events which resulted in his becoming the king of heaven and judge of the dead. However carefully we piece together the fragments of information which we can extract from native Egyptian literature, there still remains a series of gaps which can only be filled by guesswork. Plutarch, as a learned man and a student of comparative religion and mythology was most anxious to understand the history of Isis and Osiris, which Greek and Roman scholars talked about freely, and which none of them comprehended, and he made enquiries of priests and others, and examined critically such information as he could obtain, believing and hoping that he would penetrate the mystery in which these gods were wrapped. As a result of his labours he collected a number of facts about the form of the Legend of Isis and Osiris as it was known to the learned men of his day, but there is no evidence that he had the slightest knowledge of the details of the original African Legend of these gods as it was known to the Egyptians, say, under the VIth Dynasty. Moreover, he never realized that the characteristics and attributes of both Isis and Osiris changed several / Page lxxxi / times during the long history of Egypt, and that a thousand years before he lived the Egyptians themselves had forgotten what the original form of the legend was. They preserved a number of ceremonies, and performed very carefully all the details of an ancient ritual at the annual commemoration festival of Osiris which was held in November and December, but the evidence of the texts makes it quite clear that the meaning and symbolism of nearly all the details were unknown alike to priests and people. An important modification of the cult of Isis and Osiris took place in the third century before. Christ, when the Ptolemies began to consolidate their rule in Egypt. A form of religion which would be acceptable both to Egyptians and Greeks had to be provided, and this was produced by modifying the characteristics of Osiris and calling him Sarapis, and identifying him with the Greek Pluto. To Isis were added many of the attributes of the great Greek goddesses, and into her worship were introduced "mysteries" derived from non-Egyptian cults, which made it acceptable to the people everywhere. Had a high priest of Osiris who lived at Abydos under the XVIIIth Dynasty witnessed the celebration of the great festival of Isis and Osiris in any large town in the first century before Christ, it is tolerably certain that he would have regarded it as a lengthy act of worship of strange gods, in which there appeared, here and there, ceremonies and phrases which reminded him of the ancient Abydos ritual. When the / Page lxxxii / form of the cult of Isis and Osiris introduced by the Ptolemies into Egypt extended to the great cities of Greece and Italy, still further modifications took place in it, and the characters of Isis and Osiris were still further changed. By degrees Osiris came to be regarded as the god of death pure and simple, or as the personification of Death, and he ceased to be regarded as the great protecting ancestral spirit, and the all-powerful protecting Father of his people. As the importance of Osiris declined that of Isis grew, and men came to regard her as the great Mother-goddess of the world. The priests described from tradition the great facts of her life according to the Egyptian legends, how she had been a loving and devoted wife, how she had gone forth after her husband's murder by Set to seek for his body, how she had found it and brought it home, how she revivified it by her spells and had union with Osiris and conceived by him, and how in due course she brought forth her son, in pain and sorrow and loneliness in the Swamps of the Delta, and how she reared him and watched over him until he was old enough to fight and vanquish his father's murderer, and how at length she seated him in triumph on his father's throne. These things endeared Isis to the people everywhere, and as she herself had not suffered death like Osiris, she came to be regarded as the eternal mother of life and of all living things. She was the creatress of crops, she produced fruit, vegetables, plants of all kinds and trees, she made cattle / Page lxxxiii / prolific, she brought men and women together and gave them offspring, she was the authoress of all love, virtue, goodness and happiness. She made the light to shine, she was the spirit of the Dog-star which heralded the Nile-flood, she was the source of the power in the beneficent light of the moon; and finally she took the dead to her bosom and gave them peace, and introduced them to a life of immortality and happiness similar to that which she had bestowed upon Osiris. The message of the cult of Isis as preached by her priests was one of hope and happiness, and coming to the Greeks and Romans, as it did, at a time when men were weary of their national cults, and when the speculations of the philosophers carried no weight with the general public, the people everywhere welcomed it with the greatest enthusiasm. From Egypt it was carried to the Islands of Greece and to the mainland, to Italy, Germany, France, Spain and Portugal, and then crossing the western end of the Mediterranean it entered North Africa, and with Carthage as a centre spread east and west along the coast. Wherever the cult of Isis came men accepted it as something which supplied what they thought to be lacking in their native cults; rich and poor, gentle and simple, all welcomed it, and the philosopher as well as the ignorant man rejoiced in the hope of a future life which it gave to them. Its Egyptian origin caused it to be regarded with the profoundest interest, and its priests were most careful to make the temples of Isis quite different / Page lxxxiv / from those of the national gods, and to decorate them with obelisks, sphinxes, shrines, altars, etc., which were either imported from temples in Egypt, or were copied from Egyptian originals. In the temples of Isis services were held at daybreak and in the early afternoon daily, and everywhere these were attended by crowds of people. The holy water used in the libations and for sprinkling the people was Nile water, specially imported from Egypt, and to the votaries of the goddess it symbolized the seed of the god Osiris, which germinated and brought forth fruit through the spells of the goddess Isis. The festivals and processions of Isis were everywhere most popular, and were enjoyed by learned and unlearned alike. In fact, the Isis-play which was acted annually in November, and the festival of the blessing of the ship, which took place in the spring, were the most important festivals of the year. Curiously enough, all the oldest gods and goddesses of Egypt passed into absolute oblivion, with the exception of Osiris (Sarapis), Isis, Anubis the physician, and Harpokrates, the child of Osiris and Isis, and these, from being the ancestral spirits of a comparatively obscure African tribe in early dynastic times, became for several hundreds of years the principal objects of worship of some of the most cultured and intellectual nations.
